There is evidently a slight challenge for students of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Nigeria. Though, a number of universities run degree courses in the twin disciplines, the number of students admitted has been on the decline as a result of the inability to meet the requirements of admission. There is also the need to produce more teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies for primary and secondary schools in Nigeria for the optimum realization of the goals of the National Policy on Education.
It is the light of these needs that An-Najaah Islamic Institute, Ibadan floated a Diploma programme in Arabic and Islamic Studies and affiliated it with the University of Ilorin, Ilorin. Its course contents include courses in Arabic and Islamic Studies and those designed to improve the English Language proficiency of the students enrolled in the programme.
The Diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies should be able to earn its graduates an admission through Direct Entry to enrol for Bachelor of Arts Degree in Arabic, Islamic Studies, Education/Arabic, Education/Islamic Studies provided that such graduates satisfy other Ordinary Level admission requirements.
Objectives
The Diploma programme is designed to achieve the following objectives:
- provide the opportunity of tertiary education for graduates of Higher Islamic School (HIS) Certificate.;
- broaden the understanding of Arabic and Islamic Studies among students;
- equip students with new developments in the teaching and learning of Arabic and Islamic Studies;
- produce sound scholars in Arabic and Islamic Studies; and
- produce versatile learners’ with noble characters.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission into the programme, candidates must possess the following:
- A WASCE/G.C.E. O-LEVEL or Higher Islamic Studies Certificate [HISC] or Senior Islamic School Certificate [SISC] or Senior Islamic School Certificate (SISC)/SAISSCE or equivalent with 5 0’level credits including English, Mathematics; Arabic or Islamic Studies with 2 other relevant subjects.
Duration of the Program/Course Requirements
The duration shall be for two academics sessions of four (4) semesters.
Examination
- Examination shall last a minimum of one hour and maximum of three hours depending on the credit load of the course.
- The minimum pass mark in any course shall be 40%.
- Core courses must be offered and passed.
- Elective courses are available for students as optional to meet the requirements for the award of the Diploma.
- Candidates can only repeat a core course earlier failed.
- Candidates are deemed to have failed a course if they score less than 40% mark.
- Where a course has been repeated, the mark obtained in the repeated examination shall be used for computing the final result and score in the first attempt will not be countenanced.
- Students should register for not less than 30 credit units and not more than 36 credit units per academic session.
- A student shall normally be required to withdraw upon failing to acquire a minimum of 1.5 Grade Point average at the end of first academic year.
- To qualify for the award of the Diploma, a candidate must have obtained a total of 60 credit units with pass marks in all the core courses.
