The National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna was established in 1976 to provide in-service education for teachers through the Open and Distance Learning System (ODLS). As stipulated in Degree No.7 (now Act No.7) of the then Federal Military Government of Nigeria (1978). The Institute is charged with the responsibility of providing courses of Instruction leading to the development, upgrading, and certification of teachers as specified in the relevant syllabus, using Distance Education Techniques.
In its desire to fulfill its Mandate, the Institute decided to put in place programmes that aim at upgrading the quality of teachers especially at the basic education level. The introductory programmmes ran then were, the Grade Two (GRD II), Pivotal Teachers Training Programme (PTTP), and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). The Ministry of Education is specially appreciative of the Institute’s grassroots approach to teacher education through its widely acknowledged and commendable distance learning system.
After several years of running the Grade II, PTTP, and NCE programmes, the Institute deems it appropriate to upgrade the academic and professional qualifications of teachers to the degree level. In order to greatly raise the quality of teaching and learning in schools, consequently, the Institute has embarked on offering degree programmes, in affiliation with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). In its characteristic nature as a reputable institution with the singular goal of promoting teacher education nationwide, the NTI introduced Advanced (AD) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education programmes specifically designed to further equip the trained, serving teachers and offer pedagogical training to the army of untrained graduate teachers that abound in our school system today. The AD and PGDE programmes are affiliated to a University of choice in each geopolitical zone of the Federation. University of Ilorin is selected to moderate all the NTI PGDE/ADE centres in the North Central zone. The students of NTI programmes have the real chance of benefiting from its rich course modules that are written by seasoned educationists and educational administrators that are drawn from our Universities and Colleges of Education nationwide. The National Teachers’ Institute Headquarters is situated in Kaduna, Kaduna State and headed by a Director- General and Chief Executive. The Institute has six Departments with their Directors. The Departments are as follows;
Registry, headed by Registrar, Bursary, headed by Bursar, Field Operation and Students Services Department, Academic Records Department, Examination Department, Quality Assurance Department. NTI has Zonal and liaison offices headed by Zonal Coordinators, next is the State Offices, headed by State Coordinators. The State Coordinator, in collaboration with other staff members, set up a Study Centre, which is headed by a Centre Manager with a Master’s Degree as Minimum Qualification. He directs course facilitators who he works with. The Course Facilitators are drawn from various Universities and Colleges of Education in the State of location.
