The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was established by His Excellency, the then Military Governor of the State, Colonel David Bamigboye (Rtd). The decision to establish the Polytechnic was announced during the launching of the four-year Development Plan in 1971 in agreement with the policy of the Federal Military Government on the training and man power supply as contained in the National Development Plan (1970-1984)

The idea of Kwara State having its own College of Technology was first mooted by the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) during his visit to the state in 1970. At that time, he expressed the wish to upgrade the Government Technical Training College (G.T.T.C.) to a full College of Technology.

The Polytechnic which first started as a College of Technology in 1973, on a temporary site, that is, the former Institute of Technology which now houses the Centre for Continuing Education and Skills Acquisition Centre with 110 students, 12 academic staff and 3 senior administrative staff now houses 8 academic institutes / centres.

Today, the Polytechnic has grown in size and status, producing thousands of people for the growth of the economy annually at both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels with more than 50 NBTE accredited courses.

The vision of the Polytechnic is to be the foremost provider of technological and entrepreneurial skills while its mission is to teach, impart and foster the highest level of intellectual development and provide services to humanity through the exploration available scientific and research methods.

    The institution operates different centres to carry out its academic functions namely:

    • Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) where part time  programmes are run.
    • Open Distance Flexibility E-Learning where some curses are offered on-line & fully accredited by the NBTE
    • Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) in conjunctions with the ABU Zaria at ‘A’ & ‘O’ level.
    • Centre for Affiliation where some courses are run in affiliation with sister tertiary institutions.

    The polytechnic is currently offering Diploma courses in Law in affiliation with the Better by Far University,  University of Ilorin


    Facilities and Infrastructure

    The institution has state-of-the-art facilities designed to foster an excellent learning environment. These include; fully equipped lecture halls / classrooms, well-stocked libraries (e-library inclusive), well equipped laboratories for practicals with solar facility, hostel facilities with solar powered boreholes and solar powered common rooms as well as a serene and secured academic environment.

    Accreditation

    The institution offered over 50 courses which are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) at both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels. It also partners with various government institutes such as the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesha, FIIRO, Mantrac Cat, etc to ensure that students received modern practical skills that are relevant to the labour market.

    Entrepreneurial Development

    In accordance with  the NBTE directive to ensure that graduates are equipped with necessary skills before graduation and in line with the Polytechnic’s mission to produce job creators rather than job seekers, Kwara State Polytechnic integrates entrepreneurship education into its curriculum. The institution operates an Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC), which equips students with practical skills in areas such as; fashion designing, paint making, beads and wire work, tie and dye, ICT and digital marketing, POP making, hair making, barbing, 3D design, graphics design e.t.c. depending on the choice of the students.
